Autumn holiday – Törggelen in Eisack Valley and the new wine

‘Toerggelen’ is an old South Tyrolean tradition that takes place every year in the autumn. The tradition comes from a time before freezers. Different Inns took it in turns to kill a pig and serve it in as many ways as possible on one plate in the middle of the table (sausages, ribs, ravioli, schnitzel, and more). It is a real feast. There are also other delicious seasonal side dishes including chestnuts and cabbage. The young wine is tasted and the evening is rounded of with ‘krapfen’(sweet deep-fried batter filled with jam) a local specialty. While walking the current season of naturally cloudy apple juice is a welcome refreshmentalong the way. Chestnutscan be harvested all along the Eisacks Valley from late October to early November. Excursions into the World Natural Heritage site of nearby Dolomites are also an unforgettable climax.
